YORKSHIRE PARISH REGISTER TRANSCRIPTS
When research has reached the stage of utilizing the records of the Parish Church, i.e. Baptisms, Marriages and Burials it is most important to discover whether any transcripts have been made.
Many people can be seen wading through the pages of Parish registers and winding away for hours on the microfilm or microfiche copies in hope to discover that illusive ancestor. All this is very time consuming, if only there were some sort of index ! In many cases there often is.
In most libraries can be found sitting on shelfs those valuable books which contain transcriptions of various Parish registers. Most include some sort of an index.
The Yorkshire Archaeological Society began transcribing some of the Yorkshire Parish registers in the 19th century. Many have now been published, infact there are 153 volumes to date, these can be found in most central libraries, i.e. Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds, Halifax and Bradford.
Besides the Archaeological Society there are other bodies who have compiled transcripts. Below is a list of all known transcripts which cover the Kirklees area, followed by a second list of known transcripts of other Yorkshire Parishes.
