During WW1 camps and hospitals were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen and almost all remained throughout the entire war. The majority of the dead were taken to the city cemetery of St. Sever, but in 1916 it was found necessary to begin an extension. The cemetery extension now has 8,348 graves from the First World War, and was used again in the Second World War.
