Born 1891.

 

Son of John Arthur and Leah of 32 Knowle Bank Square.

 

Brother of Albert Ed. and Hilda Mary.

 

Married: Christina Brook on the 8th June 1914..

 

Occupation: Loom Chain Maker at C & J Hirst's Longwood.

 

Address: 15 Siggott Street, Longwood.

 

Killed in action: 26th May 1917. Aged 27.

 

Commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 7.

 

Mrs Wood received news from the Preston Records Office that her husband had been killed on Whit Saturday. A letter also arrived from his commanding officer. He was the eldest son of Mr. & Mrs John Wood and had celebrated his 3d wedding anniversary the week prior to his death.

 

He joined the North Staffordshire Regiment on 20th November 1916, and after going to France on 28th February this year was transferred to the Manchester Regiment.

 

Sykes was a member of the choir at Golcar Providence Methodist Church, as his father and grandfather had been, and he took a deep interest in all the activities there. His name appears on their special Memorial window.
