Born: 1893 in Golcar.

 

Son of Charles and Mary Hannah Wood.

 

Brother of Louisa, Emma Jane and May.

 

Address: 24 Green View, Wellhouse, Golcar.

 

Occupation: Weaver.

 

Killed in action: 10th October 1917. Aged 24.

 

Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 82 to 85.and 162A.

 

Arnold was killed during the Battle of Passchendaele. The Memorial to the Missing is situated 9 miles north east of leper (Ypres) town centre and holds the names of 34,926 officers and men who fell in the Flanders area of Belgium known as the Ypres Salient and have no known grave. It is the largest cemetery in Europe, and was named after a farm which was used as a dressing station which the men from Tyneside thought looked like a Tyne Cottage.

 

Arnold's brother in law John A. Whalley, husband of his sister May, was killed on 5th June 1917.
