Lijessthoek 12km west of leper (Ypres) town centre on the road to Poperinge. The village was situated on the main communication line between Allied military bases in the rear and the Ypres battlefields. Close to the Front, but out of range of most of the German artillery, it became a natural place to establish casualty clearing stations. The cemetery has 9,877 casualties. It was first used by the French and in June 1915 for British Commonwealth Forces.
