Harry Whitwam

Born: 1897 in Golcar.

 

Son of Fred and Martha Ann Whitwam.

 

Brother of Clarice and Dick.

Enlisted 5th November 1915.

 

Employed by Messrs. John Crowther + Sons, Milnsbridge.

 

Died from wounds: 5th December 1916. Aged 19.

 

Buried at Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Belgium. Row M. Grave 9.

 

Harry was seriously wounded on 4th December and died shortly afterwards. The cemetery is in a village near Ypres and holds 624 casualties. It was used between February 1915 and May 1917 by fighting units and field ambulances.

 

His parents were informed of his death by a Chaplain and a comrade.

 

Harry had begun his working life aged 13 as an office boy for a woollen manufacturer. He attended Golcar Baptist Church and was a member of Golcar Liberal Club.
