Harold Ernest Whitwam

 

 

Captain. 7th Battalion. (Territorial) Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment.

 

Born: 30th July 1890. Baptised 7th September at St John's Church, Golcar.

 

Son of Joe and Annie Whitwam, Woollen Manufacturers

 

Address: Clifton House, Golcar.

 

Brother of Percy who was 3 years younger, and Doris Irene who was 10 years younger.

 

Occupation: Textile student and member of the firm of B & J Whitwam Ltd, Stanley Mills, Golcar.

 

Killed in action 9th October 1917. Aged 27.

 

Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 82-85 and 162A.

 

Administration of his will to his father, who had retired to Bournemouth.

 

Harold had served six years in the Territorials before the war and in April 1915 went to France as a Lieutenant. After six months he was invalided home suffering from gas poisoning. He acted as an instructor in musketry at Strensall, York for more than a year, and went to France for the second time about four weeks prior to his death. He was killed at the Battle of Passchendaele.

 

He attended Golcar Church and had been a teacher in the Sunday School for some years, and an organist.
