John Alderson Whalley

Born: 1891 in Halifax.

 

Son of the late John and Alice Whalley of 12, Whitcliffe Rd, Cleckheaton.

 

Husband of May nee Wood.

 

Married: 20th March 1915 at United Methodist Church, Wellhouse.

 

Occupation: Butcher.

 

Address: 29, Green View, Wellhouse, Golcar.

 

Killed in action: 5th June 1917. Aged 26.

 

Commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Bay 2 and 3.

 

John was killed at the Battle of Arras. His wife May was living with Charles and Hannah Wood in Golcar at the time of his death. This was probably her parent's house, but they suffered another blow when their son Arnold Wood was also killed in the October of 1917.

 

John had been living in lodgings at Bankfield Terrace in Linthwaite prior to his marriage. His parents had died before John was married.
