Herman Walker

Born: 1898 in Golcar.
Son of Martha Walkerand the late Ira.
Brother of Thomas, Teddy (Edward) and Marion.

Occupation: Woollen Twister In at Messrs. Ben Hall & Son, Milnsbridge.
Joined the army in August 1916.
Killed in action: 13 March 1918. Aged 20.
Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 82 to 85, and 162A.
Herman went to France a few months after enlisting. His mother received the distressing news in April that her youngest had been killed in action. An officer wrote to say that Private Walker was out with a raiding party when he was blown up by a shell. He added that Private Walker was a bright and willing lad and beloved by all the Company.
He was well known in the district and was a member of Thorpe Green Working Men's Club and Leymoor Cricket Club. He was connected to Golcar Baptist Chapel and Sunday School. His name appears on the Roll of Honour at St. John's Church, Golcar.
