Wood Varley

Born 1887 in Golcar.

 

Son of the late George Henry, and Martha..

 

Brother of Willie, Lizzie, Tom and harry.

 

Married Ethel Ling in1914.

 

Address: 10 Grange Cottages, Marsden.

 

Occupation: Weaver at Messrs. Crowther, Bruce & Co. Ltd. Marsden.

 

Enlisted: 5th October 1916.

 

Killed in action 11th April 1917 aged 30 years.

 

Buried at Brown's Copse Cemetery, Rouex, France. Plot 2. Row E, grave 6.

 

Varley began work when he was 14 years old as a twister in a woollen mill. His father was a butcher and they lived at Westwood, Golcar when Wood was born. He was reported missing in action-presumed killed, during the Battle of Arras. His body was later recovered to be buried.

 

He was formerly a leader at Slaithwaite Zion Baptist Sunday School and was a member of the Young Men's class.

 

His name appears on the Roll of Honour in St. James' Church, Slaithwaite, Clough Head School, and on Slaithwaite and Longwood War Memorials.
