Unfortunately very few details are known about Fred. Because he lived in lodgings it could indicate that he may not have been born in this area, but he worked locally and was involved in the community. He was a member of the Christian Endeavour Society and was also a teacher Sunday School. His name appears on the Roll of Honour in Golcar Baptist Church.
The Artists Rifles was a popular unit and particularly attracted recruits from universities and those of an artistic persuasion. In view of the calibre of men serving in its ranks it became an officer producing unit in 1915. They arrived in France at the end of October 1914 and turned out more than 10,000 officers for service in other regiments.
The battalions eventually saw action in 1917 and 1918 and suffered a higher number of casualties than any other battalion. Members of the regiment won 8 Victoria Crosses, 52 Distinguished Service Orders and 1,000 awards for gallantry.
