According to Joseph's army records he had been wounded in the Face, thigh and left knee, but no date for these injuries is given. Hautmont Cemetery was used by German troops to bury their dead. It was also used by the local authorities for allied prisoners of war who died in German hospitals.
His wife Alice received an army pension of 20s/5d per week for herself and one child, beginning on 1st September 1919. Joseph's name appears on the Roll of Honour of Clough Head School, which was held at Bolster Moor Baptist.
