Youngest son of Eli (a Coal Agent and Collector) and Hannah, born in Cumberworth.

 

Brother of Herbert, a butcher, Frank A., a house painter, and George a mill mechanic.

 

Occupation: Twister In at C. & J. Hirst& Co. Longwood.

 

Address: 1 Intake, Golcar.

 

Died of wounds: 10th August 1917. Aged 20.

 

Buried in Aeroplane Cemetery -leper (Ypres), West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. III. C. 15.

 

Until July 1917 the site of the cemetery was in no man's land. During the first battle Ypres the cemetery was started and gained its name in October 1917 due to the presence of the wreck of a British aeroplane near the site of the Cross of Sacrifice which is now there.

 

Fred was educated at Crow Lane Board School. He was connected to Parkwood Methodist Church and was a member of the football team belonging to the Sunday School. He also played cricket for Leymoor United Cricket Club. Two of his brothers were also serving in the army and one was in the navy. His name appears on the Roll of Honour at St. John's Church Golcar, Parkwood Methodist Church and Crow Lane School, Milnsbridge.
