Reported missing presumed killed on 28th August 1917. Aged 23.
Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial panel 82-85 and 162A.
On 28th August the 8th Battalion were under attack in Pheasant trench, south of Langemarck. 'Y' and 'Z' companies were in the front line. They had success on the left, but the right was held up by heavy machine gun fire.
Irvin was one of the missing, and in October, his wife was still trying to find any information about him. He was a member of Colne Valley Territorials before the war, and was mobilised at the outbreak. He was a member of Golcar Lily Cycling Club and St. John's Church, Golcar where his name is on the Roll of Honour.
His brother Frank was killed in July 1918.
