Dan Shaw

 

 

Corporal. 305612. 2nd/7th Btn. Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment.

 

Born: 1897.

 

Son of Fred W. and Emma Shaw. Fred was a Housepainter, Plasterer and Inn Keeper of the Cherry Tree Inn, Pike Law, Golcar.

 

Grandson of Mary Shaw with whom he and his brother Harold lived.

 

Occupation: Finisher at B & J Whitwam

& Sons Ltd.

Enlisted: October 1914, embarked for France January 1917.

 

Died of wounds: 20th September 1917. Aged 20.

Dan was critically wounded at the beginning of September and admitted to No 4 Casualty Clearing Station. His grandma received a letter from a sister in the French Hospital to say he was suffering from extensive wounds and was dangerously ill. Shortly after that, she received a telegram to say that his wounds had proved fatal. Corporal Shaw and Joe Gledhill were both hit by the same shell, which took Joe's arm off.

 

Dan was a member of Cliffe Ash Labour Club and attended Golcar Church where his name is on the Roll of Honour.

 

The village of Grevillers was occupied by Commonwealth troops on 14th March 1917. The cemetery contains 1,924 graves.
