His Commanding Officer wrote the following to his parents, "I am very sorry indeed to have to tell you that Lance Corporal Schofield was killed in action at La Bassee in the great battle at the end of September. He was a fine chap and his loss is felt by my company. He set a fine example and was an N.C.O. of great promise. I am very sorry I can give you no particulars of his death, but at least I know this, that he was a member of a Division, the 9th Division that made for itself an undying reputation on the 25th of September and therefore he died a death that was as full of glory as a soldier could hope for."

His name appears on the Roll of Honour at St. John's Church Golcar and Golcar Baptist Church.
