Son of Reginald, a Gardener for a Woollen Manufacturer, and Mary Russell.

Jack assisted his father who was gardener to Mr. RamsdenCrowther. He attended Wellhouse School.
He was seriously wounded in the neck in July 1917 and taken to No 4 Casualty Clearing Station. An army officer wrote to his parents telling them not to worry as their son would write to them as soon as he was able. Unfortunately he did not survive his wounds. His name is on the Roll of Honour in St. John's Church, Golcar.
In 1916 the 4th Battalion were in action in the Somme at the Battle of Fleur-de-Cource and the Battle of Morval where they captured Lesboeufs.
In 1917 they were in action in the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line. They also fought in the 3rd Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Cambrai.
The cemetery holds 3,240 casualties.
