Location: 10kn south east of Albert and 27km east of Amiens. Somme. France.
Chipilly was used by field ambulances in 1916. It was captured by the Germans in March 1918 and retaken in August, after a severe struggle by the 58th Division. The Communal Cemetery contains a plot begun in 1915 and used until March 1916. The Extension contains 31 First World War burials and was made between March 1916 and February 1917, used again for three burials in the summer of 1918, which was when George lost his life.
George's father and grandfather were green grocers. He attended Wellhouse Church and Sunday School and his name is on the Roll of Honour in St. John's Church, Golcar and the Memorial in Wellhouse Churchyard.
