Tom (Thomas) Priestley

Born 1897 Golcar

 

Son of Dan and Helena.

 

Brother of Ida, Eva, Ethel, Mona, Constance and Jack.

Occupation: Twister In at Ben Hall & Sons, Milnsbridge.

 

Died of Wounds: 16th October 1918. Aged 21.

 

Buried at Queant Communal Cemetery British Extension. Row E. Grave 15A.

 

Tom was a member of Golcar Providence Methodist Church and Sunday School, and his name appears on their special Memorial Window.

 

A memorial service was held for him on the evening of Sunday 24th November 1918 at Providence attended by relatives. Rev. W. King conducted the service and the choir gave a beautiful rendition of "The Lord is my shepherd." Miss Holdsworth was the organist and played the Dead march and Mendelssohn's "O rest in the Lord."

 

Queant is 25km south of Arras. The village was behind the Hindenburg Line at the south end of a system known as the Drocourt - Queant Line. It was not captured until 2nd September 1918. The cemetery has 270 casualties.
