Leonard's father died in 1887 at the age of 33, and is buried at Golcar. Leonard was only 5 years old at the time, he was the second eldest child and his baby sister Rose had just been born. It must have been a difficult childhood with his mother struggling to raise her family alone.

His name appears on the Roll of Honour at St. John's Church, Golcar.
