Dan Pearson

 

 

Lance Corporal. 2946. 1st /5th Battalion West Riding Regiment (Duke of Wellington's)

 

Born: 1894.

 

Son of Fred, an Insurance Agent, and Louisa Pearson.

 

Brother of Emmeline, Beatrice Maud, Florence, Charles, Amy, Sarah Louisa, Mary Jane, Frank, Dora and Harold.

 

7 Brook Lane, Golcar.

 

Occupation; Insurance clerk.

 

Warehouseman at Messrs Firth & Miller. Cloth Merchants, St. John's Road, Huddersfield.

 

Enlisted in September 1914 aged 20.

 

Killed in action 15th August 1915 aged 21.

 

Commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Panel 20.

 

Dan attended Golcar Baptist Sunday School and was a member of the Young Men's Bible Class. He had been a Drill Instructor in the Boys Brigade and had served for four years with the Territorials. He was assistant secretary of Golcar Liberal Club.

 

He had previously written describing a hectic day in the trenches, when "we were firing away working our rifles till the barrels were red hot, sweat running off us, and our hands blistered."

 

On Sunday morning he was shot through the head by a sniper whilst in the act of raising his rifle. He never regained consciousness and died about an hour later. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing.

 

His name also appears on the Roll of Honour in Golcar Baptist, St. John's Church, Golcar and Huddersfield Drill Hall.
