Willie's parents received unofficial news from one of his chums, that their only son had been killed on Bank Holiday Monday. He was probably involved in the third Battle of Ypres. The letter said that he had been killed instantly by a shell and had suffered no pain.

He was actively involved with St. Michael's Mission Church in Scar Lane and had sung in the choir as a youth. His name appears on the Roll of Honour in St. John's Church, Golcar.

The Menin Gate was chosen as a Memorial Site for those who lost their lives in the Battles of the Ypres Salient because of the hundreds and thousands of men who passed through on their way to the battlefields. It holds the names of 54,397 men who have no known graves.
