Son of Thomas and Mary Ann of Burfitts Road, Quarmby.

 

Brother of Amy, Sam, Minnie and Harry.

 

Married in 1914/15.

Occupation: Pattern Healder.

 

Employed at C & J Hirst, Longwood.

 

Enlisted: 4th April 1917.

 

Killed in Action in France: Sunday 23rd September 1917. Aged 24.

 

Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 125 to 128.

 

He was sent to France on 25th June 1917, after only ten weeks of training.

 

Herbert's wife had letters from France to say the he was hit by a shell and killed instantly.

 

He attended Golcar Baptist Chapel and was a member of Oakes Working Mens Club. His name appears on the Roll of honour in St. John's Church, Golcar and Oakes Baptist Church.
