Born: 1894.

 

Son of the late Sam (Chimney Sweeps Assistant) and Emily.

 

John's mother Emily was widowed and married Whiteley Shaw in 1909.

 

Brother of Evelyn and step brother of Phylis Shaw.

 

Occupation: Teamer at Messrs. John Crowther& Sons. Union Mills, Milnsbridge.

 

Address: 15 Britannia Rd, Milnsbridge. Previously Scar Wood Terrace, Milnsbridge.

 

Enlisted: 16th January 1916.

 

Embarked for France from Clipstone Camp on the Thursday of Whit week.

 

Killed in action: 25th July 1916. Aged 22.

 

Buried at Lonsdale Cemetery. Authuille. Somme, France. Plot 7.Row E. Grave 7.

 

Authuille is a small village 5km north of Albert.

 

On the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916, the 32nd Division attacked the German line at this point and stormed the Leipzig Salient, but were compelled to retire later the same day.

 

John's mother received a letter from Captain Sam Cliffe which said "Private Kaye during the afternoon of 25th July was returned as missing but early on the Thursday morning his body was found in a shell hole. Evidently a shell had burst underneath him."

 

John went to Crow Lane School, Milnsbridge and attended Minlnsbridge Wesleyan Sunday School and later St. Michael's Mission Church in Scar Lane. His name appears on the Roll of Honour at the churches of Longwood, Golcar, Huddersfield Mission and Crow Lane School.
