Son of William and Hannah Howell.

 

Brother of Mary and Annie.

Enlisted: September 1916.

 

Embarked for France; December 1916.

 

Killed in action: 28th April 1917. Aged 31.

 

Buried at Roeux British Cemetery. Row D. Grave 11.

 

Ernest's parents received unofficial news in late June that their only son had been killed in action in France. He had joined the colours 8 months earlier, leaving for France after 4 months. He had been previously reported missing.

 

Ernest was a member of Wellhouse Liberal Club and Golcar Floral and Horticultural Society and also attended Wellhouse United Methodist Chapel. His name is on the Roll of Honour in St. John's Church Golcar.
