Hubert's father received word from the army chaplain that his son had been killed instantaneously. He had been sent to France 6 weeks earlier and had only been a short period in the trenches.
Mr Hirst had another son in training who had been recently on draft leave.
Hubert was a member of Golcar Conservative Club. His name is on the Roll of Honour in St. John's Church, Golcar and Huddersfield Drill Hall.
