Harold Schofield Hanson

 

 

Private. 19321. 10th Battalion. Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment. Born in 6th November 1893.

 

Baptised: 17th December 1893 at St. John the Evangelist Church, Golcar. Youngest son of Joe and Mary Hannah Schofield, who were married in 1878. Brother of John Henry, Louisa, Ellen and Tom Brook Schofield. Employed by John Lockwood & Sons, Milnsbridge as a Warper and Twister In.

Enlisted: February 1916.

 

Died of wounds on 24th December 1916. Aged 23.

 

Buried in St. John's Churchyard, Golcar with Full Military Honours. G. south 22.

 

Harold was well known in the district being a member of Golcar Conservative Club and Golcar Lily Cycling Club. He was connected to St. John's Church and his name appears on their Roll of Honour.

 

He was drafted to France 13 weeks after enlisting. On the 14th November he was wounded by shrapnel in the right arm for which he underwent an operation in Bolton, after returning home on 20th November. He died as a result of the arm wound and pleurisy in the 2nd Western General Hospital, Manchester.
