Born 1895 in Longwood.

 

Son of Edward and Betsy Ann.

 

Brother of Henry, Joe, Evelyn and Fred.

Enlisted: 15 June 1916.

 

Killed in action: 7th July 1917. Aged 22 years.

 

Buried at St. Nicolas British Cemetery, Arras. Plot 2, Row A. Grave 3.

 

Herbert was a member of Scapegoat Hill Brass Band and attended Scapegoat Hill Baptist Church and Sunday School.

 

The village of St. Nicolas was occupied by Commonwealth troops from Marc 1916 to the Armistice, and for much of that time was within range of Germa artillery fire. The cemetery was used by divisions and Field Ambulances stationed there.
