Mr and Mrs Haigh received news on Saturday 25th August informing them of the death of their son Fred. They were absolutely staggered to then be informed three days later that their youngest son George had also been killed in action at Nieuport. He was killed alongside Percy Taylor, also from Golcar, when their large dugout near the Battalion Quarters came under heavy enemy bombardment, destroying many buildings and the dugout. 22 personnel were found to be missing and were undoubtedly killed. Only five bodies were able to be recovered from the dugout. It was then sealed and became a war grave.

Both sons attended Westwood Church, and had been to Clough Head School. George's name appears on the Roll of Honour in St. John's Church, Golcar, Cough Head School, and Huddersfield Drill Hall.

The eldest brother Elon, survived the war. He was 30 when he enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery (68409) in 1916.
