Mrs Crowther received a telegram from the War Office informing her that her husband had died at number 3 Casualty Clearing Station in France. She had received news the previous Monday to say that he was seriously ill and could not be visited. He had been in France before his death which was from kidney disease.
Herbert was one of the founder members of Golcar Lily subdivision of the Order of Temperance. He attended Golcar Baptist Chapel and Sunday School and was a member of the Young Men's Reading Room. His name appears on the Roll of Honour in Golcar Baptist Chapel and St. John's Church, Golcar.
