Maurice was sent to France on 29th June 1915, and died of the effects of gas shell poisoning in hospital there. He had written home two weeks earlier to tell his parents he had been awarded the Military Medal.
He attended Scapegoat Hill Baptist Chapel, where his name appears on their Roll of Honour and also at St. John's Church, Golcar.
Wimereux is 5km north of Bologne and was the headquarters of Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps during the First World War. From 1914 onwards Bologne and Wimereux formed an important hospital centre and until 1918 the medical units at Wimereux used the Communal Cemetery for burials.
