Born 4th June 1879 in Slaithwaite. Baptised 11th August 1879.

 

Son of Mr & Mrs Tom and Mary Clay.

 

Brother of Fred and Tom Henry.

 

Address: 64 New North Road, Golcar.

 

Occupation: Head warehouseman at Messrs. W. & E. Crowther, Crimble Mills.

 

Enlisted in September 1916.

 

Killed in action 27th July 1917. Aged 38.

 

Buried at Hagle Dump Cemetery, Ypres. Plot 3. Row C. Grave 4.

 

Alfred was a member of Slaithwaite Conservative Club. He embarked for France in June 1917, and was killed within a few weeks. His army gratuity was awarded to his father Tom.

 

His name appears on the Roll of Honour in St. James Church Slaithwaite.
