Joe Buckley

Born: 1891 in Linthwaite.

 

Son of Ernest and Sarah of Golcar.

 

Brother of Arthur, Louisa, Tom, Harry, Edith Alice and Kathleen Mary.

 

Husband of Ivy nee Butterworth.

 

Married in June ¼ 1915.

 

Address: White Hart, Towngate, Marsden.

 

Occupation: Foreman Spinner and Scribbling Engineer at Messrs Gledhill Bros. Woollen Manufacturers. Lockwood.

 

Enlisted: November 1916.

 

Died of wounds 11th December 1917. Aged 26.

 

Buried at Etaples Military Cemetery. 31. C. 10A.

 

The cemetery holds the graves of 10,771 men who lost their lives in the region.

 

Joe served as a stretcher bearer. He was wounded in the right arm and both legs on the 27th November 1917, and taken to Etaples Base Hospital, where his right leg was amputated. He died of his wounds shortly afterwards.

 

His name is on the Marsden War Memorial and the Roll of Honour in St. John's Church, Golcar.
