John was severely wounded in the shoulder while serving in France in June 1918. He returned to Huddersfield to be treated at Beech Street Military Hospital in Paddock, probably the one housed in Paddock Council School, which was used an auxiliary hospital. Towards the end of October he contracted influenza, which developed into pneumonia, and he died on Saturday morning the 16th November.
He was buried with full military honours at St John's Church Golcar, and his name appears on the Roll of Honour there.
A memorial service was held at St. John's on Sunday 24th November. Rev. Crawshaw of the Pastorial Church Aid Soc. conducted the service. The hymn "My God, my Father, while I stray was sung. The organist was Mr. J. F. Pearson, who played a funeral march at the close.
