Died of wounds 13th May 1917. Aged 29.
Buried at St. Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L'avoue. France.

Ernest's parent received news from Rev. H.E. Tiltson the C. of E. Chaplain to say their son had been killed by a shell whilst on church parade, and was buried in a military cemetery the next day. Ernest was their eldest son and joined the army on his 28th Birthday in 1916. He was a prominent member of Golcar Conservative Club and attended Golcar Church where his name appears on the Roll of Honour. The Townsend's have another two sons serving.
