Son of Mary and the late John William.

 

Brother of Mary Ann, Fannie, Lewis and uncle of Frank

Occupation: Weaver at Crimble Mills, Slaithwaite.

 

Enlisted 24th May 1916.

 

Embarked for France January 1917.

 

Assumed date of death: 3rd May 1917. Aged 37.

 

Walter is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Bay 6.

 

He was reported missing on the 3rd May at the Battle of Bullecourt, and he was presumed to have been killed on that day. His body was found lying out on the battlefield sixteen weeks later on the 24th August.

 

His brother Frank was a widower aged 26 and lived in the family home in 1911 with his son Frank aged 1. Walter was a well known cricket and football player. His name is on the Roll of Honour at St. John's Church Golcar, St. James Church Slaithwaite and Huddersfield Drill Hall.
