Thomas Homer Forshew

Born: 22nd October 1894, baptised 25th December 1894 at St. John's Church Golcar.

 

Son of William Richard and Mary Emma.

 

Brother of Horace, Maud, Maxwell and George.

 

Address: 85 (now 90) Swallow Lane, Golcar.

 

Employed by B & J Whitwam, Stanley Mills, Golcar.

 

Killed in action 3rd May 1917, in the Battle of Bullecourt. Aged 23.

 

Commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Bay 6.

 

Thomas's father William was originally from Strood in Kent, but moved to live in Golcar as a young man, and worked as a traction engine driver, having brought the first steam roller into the district.

 

Thomas was reported missing on the 3rd May 1917, and in March 1918 his parents received the news that he was now officially presumed to have killed on the date he went missing. His brother Horace was reported missing eleven days after him. The two brothers had enlisted together and served in the same regiment. They are both commemorated on the Arras Memorial.

 

His name is on the Roll, of Honour in St. John's Church, Golcar and Huddersfield Drill Hall.
