Horace was killed during the Battle of Bullecourt. He was very popular in his company and many letters had been received from his pals. He had recently been at home on leave after serving about 6 months at the front, and was killed a fortnight after his return. Horace had been in Cone Valley Territorials prior to the outbreak of war. At the date of his death his elder brother Tom, was reported missing since an engagement on 3rd May. The two brothers had been together since enlisting, and went to France together with the Battalion in January. Horace attended Golcar Church.
Their father William, originally from Kent, enlisted at the outbreak of war, but after a few months service in the Royal medical Corps in France was wounded and discharged from the army.
Horace is commemorated on the Arras Memorial with his brother, and his name is on the Roll of Honour in St. John's Church, Golcar and Huddersfield Drill Hall.
